The air pressure is rising, but it is still windy. Nevertheless, most boats leave Sandviken on Kökar. We scurry through the maze of the islands of Åland with heavily reefed sails. A first stop allows us to visit the famous island church of Sottunga from 1728 (and the lesser known associated communal relief area decorated with Christian paraments, see below).
Sottunga features 111 inhabitants, 0% unemployment, and its own Swedish dialect, hence the name (“sotig” = “dirty”, “tunga” = “tongue”). The small harbour (see below) is unprotected against the strong southerly winds, so we move on to the larger island of Degerö.
