Torekov is where the western Swedish archipelago begins. The somewhat strange name supposedly means “Thoras skov”, Thora’s forest. She was the princess of a Danish king who had remarried. Her wicked stepmother had her drowned; her body was washed up on the beach here and found by the blind Frenne. He promised to bury the dead girl in consecrated ground and was given back his sight in return. This miracle made the Virgin Thora the patron saint of the area and Frenne had a chapel built out of gratefulness.
