Sejerø is named after the abundant Sejen (coalfish or saithe), which was successfully coloured red after the decline in salmon fishing 100 years ago and sold as salmon, even though it is a species of cod (to this day, the fish is sold as “Seelachs” – literally “sea salmon” in Germany, although it is not related to salmon).
